I was thinking to myself as I created this blog about two things. Homemaking and globetrotting. I am in all actually a woman who despite having a bachelors and masters degree in social work decided to put those aside and stay home. I quit a job that although incredibly stressful was very important to me....so that I could stay home. I am always planning the next great adventure, plotting up a trip that will take us across the globe to new places that will entice and amaze us. And I do go and travel and adventure and immerse myself in worlds and places afar, but mostly I stay home. This is why I named my blog what I did. One Particular Harbor is actually a Jimmy Buffet song. I like the concept of a harbor, a shelter from the storm. I like harbors because they do two things. They protect, provide a haven, and safety for vessles and their crew~ very important. But, they also serve as the starting point, resting point, and continuation point for a great many adventures at sea. Harbors are different from ports. A port is where ships come into, not seeking shelter, but mostly to drop off or pick up goods. Before I was a mom I think I was more of a port styled adventurer. I wanted to just wander from place to place, port to port. Now, I still feel the call of the sea and the road and the wind but I know that I must make harbor at times. That I must be the harbor at times for my son and my husband.
It is incredibly possible to be both an adventurous globetrotter and a 'stay at home mommy' at the same time it just requires a different mode of operation.
I do not think that God intended women to just become mothers and then slipslide away into piles of laundry at days end. I think that he created motherhood (parenthood actually) to be one of the greatest adventures of a lifetime. Thus, I believe that the greatest adventure of a lifetime can with some finesse become merged with a lifestyle of exploration and discovery and adventure. Sometimes this lifestyle will take us to great places and othertimes just down the street. Children are not supposed to burden us down with the mundane- look at their natural curiosity and wonder! Perhaps this is what this blog will be about, the journey of a simple stay at home mom with a very bad case of wonderlust.
